Traditional, lacquer based kintsugi, shaping kokuso,
This video shows shaping kokuso using traditional, lacquer based kintsugi. Kokuso is a mixture of flour, water, lacquer and wood powder. It is strong and easy to shape. I am shaping it after applying it to an already reconstructed ear and horn on this figure. I can’t get the shape I need so am applying extra material so get it. I will need to again apply some more kokuso as the bottom of the ear is too high compared to the other side.

Traditional, lacquer based kintsugi, preparing piece to fit back together
This video shows a piece being taken apart. The vase had extensive secondary cracks that were too wide to be repaired as is so I had to finish the breaks. It broke along some lines I didn’t see cracks in but now all the pieces don’t have any more cracks.

Traditional, lacquer based kintsugi, step 8, sanding sabi
This video shows sanding sabi that has middle black lacquer on it. I use a #800 mesh sanding stone and several cutting tools. The glaze is a middle fire type that will easily stain so I make sure there is not a puddle of water on the surface.
